CEEweb for Biodiversity was established in 1993 by NGOs from
a number of CEE countries (Albania, Bulgaria, Croatia, the
Czech Republic, Hungary, Latvia, Macedonia, Romania, Serbia,
Slovakia, and Slovenia) with the support of the European Union
and two Hungarian NGOs taking the lead (the National Society
of Conservationists and Green Action). Since then altogether
81 organizations from 17 countries have joined us from the
region.
From the beginning our members have been assessing national
efforts for the protection of Since its establishment CEEweb
has become more and more oriented towards EU and regional
level policy development in order to respond to the major
challenges in the region. We carried out various assessments
of international policy commitments at national level and
became closely engaged in policy processes in fields such
as nature conservation, rural development or tourism under
regional EU legislation. With our lobbying and awareness raising
work we successfully contributed to favourable decisions at
COP meetings and to the elaboration of effective policy frameworks.
In order to link international processes with local level
implementation, we initiated model projects in tourism, rural
development and nature conservation. In addition with dozens
of conferences, workshops and seminars we contributed to the
development of civil society in Central and Eastern Europe.
Some of the main achievements in the
previous years:
CEEweb became an accredited NGO with observer status to
the UNEP Governing Council and an observer member of the
