The most recent high-level conference of the
Pan-European Biological and Landscape Diversity Strategy (PEBLDS)
was held in the fall of 2009. CEEweb prepared inputs on different
scales for the event.
PEBLDS has undergone a major reform since its
endorsement in 1995. Also, in line with what CEEweb and other
NGOs have been advocating for, it has become the European
response to support the implementation of the Convention on
Biological Diversity through concrete activities.
Making a strong link between CBD COP decisions and the conference
agenda, the Conference focused on the following three topics:
- Valuing ecosystem services
- Biodiversity and climate change
- Post-2010 vision for the Pan-European region
CEEweb focused on the preparation of background documents
for each of theme of the Conference:
- Valuing ecosystem services (in English,
and in Russian
(pdf, 80 KB)) and related case
studies (pdf, 180 KB).
- Biodiversity and climate change (in English
and in Russian
(pdf, 70 KB))
- Post-2010 vision for the Pan-European region (in English
and in Russian
(pdf, 90 KB))
In addition, CEEweb collected national assessments about
Pan-European biodiversity conservation, the progress of nature
protection and its main shortcomings, and compiled a synthesis
report from the results. Read

Finally, together with ECO Forum, CEEweb coordinated the
Pan-European NGO input into the Conference. In the framework
of a one-day NGO preparatory meeting just before the event,
we discussed the most effective ways to ensure a strong and
effective NGO contribution to the high-level event. In order
to reach common understanding on solving nature conservation
challenges, we discussed effective lobbying strategies as
well as possible joint project ideas for stopping biodiversity
loss. Read

Publication for the Conference:
- Booklet about the links among today's different sectoral
problems (biodiversity loss and unemployment, hunger and
climate change, etc.) - Why Does Biodiversity Loss Matter?
- Answers for Ministers and Children (in English
and in Russian
(pdf, 2 MB))
The activities of CEEweb related to the 5th Biodiversity
in Europe Conference are realized with the financial support
of the Federal Office of Environment of Switzerland (FOEN)
and of the UNEP Regional Office for Europe.
