A national Biodiversity Picnic was realised on 1 June 2008
in Azerbaijan organised by the Ministry of Ecology and Natural
Resources together with the Sustainable Development Society.
The picnic took place in Hirkan National Park, located in
the southern part of Azerbaijan. Organizers invited approximately
60 representatives from the governmental, non-governmental
and business sectors, as well as from the media.
After having breakfast in the scenic National Park, participants
from different institutions (Ministry of Education, Ministry
of Agriculture, National Academy of Sciences, consulting companies,
etc.) took part in the construction of a tourist path. After
tiring themselves in the physical work, they enjoyed the local
exhibition about agricultural biological diversity with twenty
kinds of fruit and vegetables grown in the neighbourhood.
At the event a roundtable was organized, where stakeholders
could discuss problems, exchange information and share best
practices of biological diversity conservation.
The event was realised with the support of CEEweb and UNEP
Regional Office for Europe.
