Regional conference on Ecosystem–based adaptation and lessons for national adaptation planning

22 September 2015 at 08:00 - 23 September 2015 at 17:00

CEEweb has been invited to present the economic benefits of Ecosystem Based Adaptation at the ClimaEast Event in Moldova.

Date: 22-23 September 2015
Time: 2 full days
Venue: Chisinau, Moldova

This regional conference is organised jointly by the Clima East Policy and Pilot projects and will take place in Chisinau (Moldova), on 22 and 23 September 2015. The objective of the conference is to provide Clima East Pilot projects’ and policy stakeholders with information on ecosystem-based approaches empowering them to formulate and move towards an enhanced enabling policy environment on the national level.  Participants will be given guidance to be able to formulate specific needs that relate to ecosystem-based adaptation approaches on both the regional and national levels. The meeting will identify key policy obstacles and opportunities, solutions that policymakers and stakeholders can consider, and initiatives for consideration in Clima East work planning for 2016.

Climate change is placing pressures on all countries to make progress in adaptation planning.  However all countries, including the Clima East Partner Countries and the EU, face challenges and barriers to action at national level,  in particular since the task requires cross-sectoral and inter-agency action that may not align with existing governance structures.  Clima East is supporting innovative ecosystem-based adaptation approaches through its Pilot Projects which offer novel opportunities to demonstrate the principles of inclusive planning for resilience and adaptation, the possibility of achieving multiple benefits and synergies, including enhanced cooperation across administrative boundaries between territories and sectors, and targeting emissions reductions alongside adaptation benefits.  However, the Pilots, alongside other similar initiatives, also serve to reveal blockages or restrictions to progress stemming from the existing policy and enabling environment.  These can provide insight and highlight challenges to inform Government discussions and decisions on how to plan more effectively at national level for the challenges ahead, and for mainstreaming climate change awareness into all relevant policy areas.
