RESOURCE USE Workshop – Innovative tools for limiting resource use

18 June 2013 at 09:30 - 15:00

Global resource consumption is steeply on the rise, extracting 34 times more material resources now than hundred years ago.

Despite several good intents of the European Commission to decrease the use of resources in Europe, we are still increasing the amount of resources we use. Main approach for the EC is decoupling resource use with economic growth, without any consideration of the rebound effect (Jevons Paradox). Technological solutions are far from enough. Other strategies are needed: social innovation, capping resources tools (quota), resource sufficiency indicators and evaluation and also develop an economic system based on a sustainable supply (not exploiting resources when environmental and social cost is not justifiable).

We need to set a cap on the use of resources including all types of raw materials if we want to effectively bring down their consumption in the EU and refit our economy inside its ecological space.

The aim of this workshop was to discuss how a resource cap could be designed, what are the criteria, what are the challenges and pitfalls. For that reason we want to present existing proposals and debate them, for future, more in depth, discussions.
