URBES Conference

14 January 2015

The URBES – Urban Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services project (2012-2014) is an EU funded project, led by the Stockholm Resilience Centre, with the involvement of numerous research institutes, ICLEI (Local Governments for Sustainability), IUCN – International Union for Conservation of Nature, and the cities: Stockholm, Berlin, Salzburg, Barcelona, Rotterdam, Helsinki and New York.

Over the past three years, the project has contributed to informing urban planners and decision-makers on how to best integrate the natural environment into city planning, by bridging the knowledge gap on the importance of urban biodiversity and ecosystem services for human well-being. Nature is of great value to cities – it improves quality of life, reduces ecologic footprints and climate change impacts, and also strengthens the green economy.

The URBES project has resulted in multiple research outcomes related to the role of biodiversity and ecosystem services in urban landscapes. On 14 January 2015, a conference will be held in Brussels to present these results, build on the project’s insightful findings and identify areas for future collaboration.
