Challenges and potentials of river restoration and conservation in Europe
in light of the Biodiversity Strategy 2030

Organized by CEEweb for Biodiversity

Co-host: The Nature Conservancy

Date and time: 13 July, 2020 13:30-17:30 CET

The European Commission has published the new EU Biodiversity Strategy which is a major pillar of the EU Green Deal and strategic work until 2030. As a part of the Nature Restoration Plan, the strategy has ambitious targets related to freshwater ecosystems, namely at least 25,000 km of rivers will be restored into free-flowing rivers through the removal of barriers and the restoration of floodplains and wetlands.

The webinar Challenges and potentials of river restoration and conservation in Europe in light of the Biodiversity Strategy 2030 aimed to provide an overview of the current conservation and restoration situation of the rivers in Europe, and discussed the future possibilities to strengthen river protection and improve their ecological/conservation status based on the opportunities provided by the new strategy.
