Biodiversity seriously suffers from unsustainable exploitation, pollution and land-use changes throughout Central and Eastern Europe also as a result of unsustainable tourism activities. Sustainable forms of tourism however, could provide opportunities for biodiversity conservation. To contribute to the safeguarding of natural and cultural heritage of the CEE region, alternatives have to be found. Taking into consideration the ongoing enlargement of the European Union and the increased consumer demands for tourism and recreation in the region, it is greatly needed to develop a holistic approach to tourism development, which takes into account both social and environmental considerations.
