Cities and Landscape Planning

The network of Natura 2000 sites is increasingly expanding in urban areas. There are over 32 major EU cities hosting over 100 Natura 2000 sites. Most protected habitats are forests, rivers and grasslands. Urban spaces are expanding and this can pose a threat to the surrounding biodiversity, but also an opportunity for integrating biodiversity into urban spatial planning. This can in turn add socio-economic value that translates into enhanced well-being of a city’s inhabitants.
