Halting the loss of biodiversity is a great challenge, which
requires a lot of coordinated efforts at all levels with broad
stakeholder involvement. Any effort supporting sustainable
development, contributing to the integration of biodiversity
concerns into policy- and decision-making, as well as building
partnerships within and among the sectors and across the country
borders will clearly contribute to this aim.
CEEweb organised a conference related to the target of halting
biodiversity loss by 2010 and the relevant global, Pan-European,
regional and national processes, initiatives and efforts between
3-4 November, 2004 in Budapest. Download

The conference aimed to promote understanding of the different
ongoing processes related to the 2010 target among the governmental,
intergovernmental and non-governmental participants, and to
explore the opportunities, gaps and main obstacles.
The findings of the national assessments carried out by
NGOs in South-East European countries were also discussed
and the experiences shared.
Ultimately it was intended to mobilize NGOs and build partnerships
among the stakeholders for the most effective cooperation
towards halting the loss of biodiversity. The "Position
paper on NGO involvement in actions towards the target to
halt biodiversity loss by 2010" on NGO involvement
in the processes and realising the target was elaborated and
considered, which should provide a basis for future strategic
collaboration.
The conference was supported by:
National Civic Fund of Hungary
Biodiversity Service
Soros Foundation
