Seminar: "Implementation of CITES and problem of poaching in the Green Belt Velebit area"

Poaching is one of the threats to biodiversity and to the long-term conservation and sustainable development of the large karst landscape system in the Green Belt Velebit area. It is both against the objectives of CBD, and violates CITES. Thus Green Action organised a seminar on poaching and the implementation of CITES in November. Read more >>

A new proposal on hunting was adopted in the second reading in the Croatian Parliament. Participants at a workshop organized by UNEP and the Italian Ministry of Environment and Territory and hosted by EURAC in Italy acknowledged in their statement that the Balkan mountain regions are characterized by rich biological and cultural diversity, face many problems, and thus call for a regional legal functioning framework for co-operation. Elaboration and finalization of a management plan for the Pelister National Park

The Pelister Mountain Conservation Project in Macedonia aims to contribute to the reinforcement of a state-civil society dialogue in the context of natural resources management. During the first phase of the project, a draft management plan was developed for Pelister National Park, though incompletely and without formal legal base. Within this exercise Makmontana strived for incorporating the principles and ecosystem approach of the CBD into the management plan. Read more >>

Research and elaboration of management plan for Talmaza Wetland

The Convention on Biological Diversity stipulates that each Party should develop guidelines for management of protected areas, and the Conference of Parties invites Parties in collaboration with local communities and other stakeholders to undertake researches on the elaboration of management plans. Otter survey on Lika river in Croatia

Otter is protected under a number of international agreements (the Bern Convention, Habitats Directive, CITES and EU Wildlife Trade Regulation) and also listed in the Red Data Book of Croatia. Developing environmental impact assessment procedures for a World Bank project

In order to satisfy the growing needs of the population and in the same time to maintain the ecological equilibrium, it is necessary to undertake some preventing and mitigating measures. Environmental assessment is such a tool, which is also guided by international agreements, especially the Convention on the Transboundary Effects of Industrial Accidents, the Water Convention and the Espoo Convention. BIOTICA started a new activity in this field developing procedures under the Rural Investments and Services Project financed by the World Bank. Read more >>

Management plan for steppe ecosystem in Ramsar
Site "Lower Dniester"

The Strategy and the Action Plan for the Conservation of Biological Diversity in Moldova focuses among other main objectives on the assessment of the existing situation and specifics of biological diversity. BIOTICA decided to research the status of biological diversity in the region of Lower Dniester and to develop management plan in line with the Addis Ababa Principles of the CBD. Read more >>

Legislation review from the point of view of National Ecological Network creation

The prevailing national conditions impose an urgent need for the identification, recognition and development of the National Ecological Network (NEN) in Moldova. BIOTICA decided to make a review of some laws in force at the moment in Moldova that stipulate responsibility and options for the most important juridical persons, which coordinate, regulate and implement land tenure in their competence with respect to nature protection functions, which is also suggested by the CBD Work Progarmme on Protected Areas. Campaign on River Drava against its destruction

Since 2003 Green Action has been participating in an ongoing campaigning process against gravel excavation and destruction of the river Drava by its devastating regulation. The plans are in contradiction with the conclusions of the Croatian Environmental Impact Study (EIS) and Croatia's Biodiversity Strategy. Also this represents a violation of international conventions to which Croatia has committed itself in order to protect and restore the unique river ecosystem - among others also Convention on Biological Diversity. Fresh waters although being important ecosystems, their status is very much threatened, as it is also noted by the Inland Waters Work Programme of the CBD. Thus Young Researchers of Serbia have placed this year's Earth Day celebration in April in a beautiful village Kupinovo of Srem, bordering the Ramsar site and Important Bird area, the wetland Obedska bara.
