Military Training Areas programme - Protecting biodiversity on military used land

In 2006 CEEweb started an international project to preserve outstanding natural values in military managed areas in the CEE/SEE countries.

Data collection, inventories

We realized early that data about biodiversity and nature protection in Military Training Areas is scattered in CEE countries. We need to collect and streamline data to be able to analyse the situation, focus on priority sites, habitats and species and to set conservation objectives.

We collect data from Military Training Areas on

  • general information
  • information on habitats, species of Community Importance (Natura 2000) and nationally protected habitats and species
  • existing inventories
  • effect of military use on species and habitats
  • conservation management activities, if any
  • cooperation between sectors (different ministries, ministries and NGOs)
  • environmental awareness of military authorities
  • uses by other stakeholders

Part of the data will be made public in a comprehensive database on this website later.
If you are interested in the available information or if you would like to help us with data collection please contact Sarolta Tripolszky.

Meetings

Within the reconnaissance phase basic information was gathered on national level, and the interested organisations shared their experiences at a Working Group meeting in Moravský Svätý Ján, Slovakia, 17-19 May 2007. After the meeting, participants were given a guided tour to the Zahorie Military Training Area by Ph.D Jaromil Sibl.

See the presentations under 'Resources'.
