Seminar for accession countries in the Western Balkans

Biodiversity can only be protected, when the unsustainable socio-economic structures of today’s society change. CEEweb for Biodiversity believes in the overarching importance of sustainable development for accession countries.

The seminar for accession countries in the Western Balkans entitled“EU accession – threats and possibilities for rural development and biodiversity conservation” organized by CEEweb in cooperation with Association for Nature, Environment and Sustainable Development "Sunce" was held on 1-4 September 2008, in Split, Croatia.

The seminar themes were grouped around three subjects:

  • Sustainability and the EU
  • Impact of EU accession
  • Civil society

We looked at the general EU context of sustainability and how the accession influenced biodiversity and rural development in the 12 new member states.

Also, the current situation in the Balkan countries was discussed and opportunity was provided to share experiences and good practices between EU and accession countries.

Besides giving space for presentations, we involved participants to interactively analyze problems and work out their own strategies and actions as well.
