Organisation: Green Liberty Website: www.zalabriviba.lv Added: June 30, 2023
Project start date: May 30, 2022
Project end date: December 31, 2023

Narrative

The aim of the project is to promote the use of environmentally friendly public transport and increase the number of passengers in environmentally friendly public transport in Daugavpils. The project is a continuation of the tram infrastructure improvement works started in previous projects, in order to ensure high-quality, convenient and safe passenger transportation in the city of Daugavpils, thus attracting a larger number of passengers. The following actions are planned in the project:

  • Construction of a new tram line that will connect the city center in the section from the existing tram line ""Stacija-Cietoksnis"" (2.10 km);
  • Reconstruction of the existing tram line in the section of Smilšu Street (from Valkas Street to Jātnieku Street, including the turn to Jātnieku Street) (0.7km);
  • Reconstruction of the existing tram line in the section of Jātnieku Street (from Smilšu Street to the Depo area) (0.9 km);
  • Reconstruction of the existing tram line on tram route 2 (in the section from the intersection of November 18 and Ventspils streets to Jāņa street) (2.9km)
  • Purchase of 6 new trams;

The construction of a new tram line will connect the Cietoksnis neighborhood with the city center. This will significantly improve the mobility of the residents of the areas adjacent to the tram line, offering environmentally friendly and convenient passenger transportation by tram. A tunnel will be built to cross the railway tracks, which will significantly save the time spent on the road by avoiding the waiting time at the railway crossing.

Financial data

Total investment: 29 598 590.00 €. EU investment: 23 179 500.00 € (78,3%).

Recommendations

This project seems to bring only benefits. Unfortunately, Daugapils has decided on partial non-fulfillment of the project. The line "Station" - "Cietoksnis" will not be built, and instead of 6 tram cars, four will be purchased. These trams will also not be true low-floor trams, which will mean that a large part of the population will still have difficulty getting into them.
