Narrative

In April 2019, the Government of the Slovak Republic approved a change to the Environmental Quality Operational Program. The goal was to reduce emissions of dust particles into the air. In addition to industrial production, the reason is inefficient heating in households. Support for replacing old solid fuel boilers with new gas boilers was supposed to help. In October 2019, the Ministry of the Environment decided to allocate funds in the amount of 30 million euros to this project. The plan has been criticized by non-governmental organizations and other interested and professional subjects as unilaterally supporting gas and thereby closing a gas trap. Instead, they proposed targeting the proposed support to improve the thermal performance of buildings and renewable energy sources. This program was eventually stopped and new calls were made for the renovation of buildings and the installation of RES.

Recommendations

Completely retreat from supporting natural gas as a false alternative to coal. On the contrary, focus on the creation and development of programs that support the renovation of buildings and the development of renewable energy sources.
