Narative

One of the largest and busiest centres of environmental education in the Czech Republic. The low-energy building, supplied almost exclusively from renewable energy sources, links all the innovative technologies used with education. The heating of the premises is solved by ground-water heat pumps combined with a solar system in suitable seasons. Low-potential sources are topped up with a biomass boiler. An integral part of the centre's operation is the pursuit of maximum environmental friendliness, which is reflected in the consistent sorting of waste, the use of environmentally friendly cleaning products, recycled materials, etc. The centre has operated for a long time without dependence on grants and external support - thanks to the intelligent renovation of the building, the combination of commercial and non-commercial activities and, above all, the very low operating costs. In 2014, Kaprálův mlýn was awarded the SCENES (Scout Centre of Excellence for Nature and Environment) label and became a member of the Goose Network (an international network of scout bases that share programmes).

Financial data

The project cost approximately CZK 55 000 000, CZK 44 000 000 (EUR 1.8 mil.), of which was financed by the ESI funds in the programming period 2007-2013.

Recommendations

Continue with the development of ecological education centres operating with maximum environmental friendliness. In order to do that, the allocation from ESI funds should be increased.
