Waste management in Vsetín

Organisation: Centre for Transport and Energy Website: Added: November 24, 2022
Project start date: April 13, 2011
Project end date: May 31, 2012

Narative

The town of Vsetín ranks among the three greenest towns in the Czech Republic, not only in terms of the share of green areas in the total area but also in terms of its approach to the environment. In recent years, it has been trying to change its municipal waste management in a way that leads to better environmental sustainability. The city has built three logistics centres for waste collection and underground containers for sorted waste. Furthermore, it is trying to motivate residents to sort waste through promotional events and educational programmes for schools.

Financial data

The construction of a plant for the processing of biodegradable waste cost a total of CZK 53 804 718, 85% of which was covered by European funds (EUR 2 204 957).

Recommendations

This project is special because it introduces a comprehensive system for waste management in the city. On top of that, it strengthens the cooperation between the municipality, private and non-profit sectors as well as involving residents and primary school students. For the current programming period, it is much more difficult to push through such projects, as the current subsidy programme no longer provides such a high percentage of subsidies. We, therefore, recommend increasing the allocation allowing more municipalities to participate.
