Project Sinica – air pollution monitoring in Slovenia

Organisation: Umanotera Website: www.umanotera.org Added: December 12, 2022
Project start date: September 29, 2016
Project end date: March 31, 2021

Narative

By upgrading the system for monitoring air pollution, identifying the causes for abnormal air pollution burdens and analysing the impacts of improvement measures, the project SINICA of the Slovenian Environment Agency ARSO contributes to cleaner air and less health impacts from air pollution in Slovenia. Having precise data available is the basis for developing measures for improving air quality. New equipment and tools as well as in-depth knowledge improve the monitoring of adopted measures.

Financial data

MFF 2014-2020: 6.333.656 EUR (85% EC, 15% national budget)

Recommendations

Air pollution is largely a local phenomenon with very damaging and costly impacts on our health. Without a widespread network of monitoring stations, it is difficult to identify air pollution hotspots and implement improvements. Currently in many EU member states the nework of air pollution monitoring stations is vastly insufficent. Due to the large health damages caused by air pollution, investments into monitoring them and acting accordingly quickly pay off and are, hence, strongly recommended.
