LIFE in RUNOFF - urban climate adaptation in the field of precipitation management in Budapest

Organisation: Clean Air Action Group, Hungary Website: www.levego.hu Added: January 03, 2023
Project start date: July 01, 2021
Project end date: June 30, 2025

Narative

The main objective of the project is to support urban climate adaptation in the field of precipitation management by identifying and strengthening synergies between green and blue infrastructures, in three districts of Budapest (VII, XII, XVIII). The project is planned to effectively reduce the harmful consequences of sudden rainfall by combining a nature-based approach with technological solutions. Vulnerability assessments will identify intervention points in the three Budapest partner districts, followed by demonstration elements to showcase urban stormwater management to professionals, decision-makers and city residents. By the end of the project, the target groups are expected to treat rainwater as an asset, while at the same time being aware of and implementing solutions to reduce and prevent the adverse consequences of sudden rainfall events. Some of the technological solutions to be realized are a decentralised water retention system in the very densely populated city center; the installation of underground tanks, cisterns and a "model" street (with a rain garden - planting of special native plants) in a hilly district of Budapest, and the replacement of paved surfaces by permeable pavements in a suburban district of the city.

Financial data

Total: 3,053,810 Euro (EU funding: 55%)

Recommendations

- Similar nature based solutions helping urban climate change adaptation are recommended to be supported by EU funding.

- The technological solutions of precipitation management (rain gardens, cisterns for harvesting rainwater, permeable pavements, minimizing the area covered by asphalt, etc.) applied in this project should be made mandatory for real estate developments.
