Narative

In Mikolajice in the Opava region, the first Wave microelectric power plant was launched in 2019, producing heat and electricity for the local municipal office, grocery store and fire station. The equipment, developed by the University Centre for Energy Efficient Buildings at the Czech Technical University in Prague, consists of a so-called cogeneration unit that can supply not only heat but also electricity using a wood chip boiler. For buildings, industrial enterprises or smaller municipalities, this device thus enables at least temporary energy independence, for example, during a power outage.

The project was financed by the European Regional Development Fund in the programming period 2014-2020, and received EUR 135 786.27.


Recommendations

Once the prototype is thoroughly tested, it should be prepared for commercialisation to be not only affordable but also easy to use. Ideally, this device could also be used as an independent energy source in homes, schools, accommodation facilities or small businesses. The current legislation must be changed so individual entities such as villages or local associations can sell surplus electricity generated by them to the grid at market prices.
