Wastewater treatment in Slovenia

Organisation: Umanotera Website: www.umanotera.org Added: March 18, 2022
Project start date: January 11, 2022
Project end date: December 31, 2023

Narative

Based on available funding from the Recovery & Resilience Programme, Slovenia's Ministry of Environment issued a tender on wastewater treatment for settlements with fewer than 2,000 inhabitants. The primary aim of this effort is to address the fact these small settlements did not formerly qualify for programme support in previous years when similar projects were carried out to benefit larger towns and cities.

Financial data

Total funding: EUR 54 mln (2.2 % of Slovenia's EUR 2.482 bln recovery budget)

Recommendations

There is potential to improve the financial sustainability of supported projects. Given that rural populations in Slovenia are quite dispersed, these communities might be better served through the installation of several small treatment plants instead of one larger plant. Such a solution could reduce investment and operational costs, as far fewer pipes would needed to connect every dwelling to a single central system.
