With the growth of settlements, the gradual increase in human activities has significantly shaped and transformed the sandy landscape.
Today, the two largest contiguous natural areas are owned by the Ministry of Defence in Hungary and are functioning as their training area. Intriguing that the most intensively used areas by the military became the most valuable for wildlife and their conservation. The enclosed world used by the military has protected habitats from urban sprawl, and thus from development, and from entering by unauthorised people and the general public. Moreover, several military training regimes have proved beneficial to some specialist pioneer plants which are on the decline in other parts of the country.
