Climate changes the world and we need journalists to write about it

Slovak partner of the project BROZ organized a three-part journalist conference focused on the topic of climate change. Under the common name Climate changes the three parts were divided into Climate changes regions - focused on regional journalists, Climate changes Slovakia - aimed at journalists from bigger media published in the whole country, and Climate changes the world - aimed at the readers.

Although climate change is a global phenomenon, it manifests itself mainly locally. In a number of small stories that make up the mosaic of global climate change. But that is precisely why its urgency often escapes us. It is important for climate change to be reflected in regional news. That is why in Climate changes regions climatologist Jozef Pecho, Spokesperson at The Union of Towns and Cities of Slovakia Daniela Piršelová and deputy editor-in-chief of newspaper SME Jakub Filo thought journalists how climate change manifests itself in regions and how to write about it

We have known for a long time that climate change changes the environment. However, climate change affects many other areas of our lives. How climate change changes our mental health, economic situation, urban environment and our lifestyle and approach to it, was talked about at the Climate changes Slovakia press conference. The conference was organized into thematic blocks so that journalists could only attend mainly the ones that they should write about. The opening speech was held out by Pakistani journalist Kunwar Khuldune Shahid, who writes about climate change for world media such as The Guardian, Le Monde and Al Jazeera. Using the example of Pakistan, he showed us how climate change affects different areas of our lives.

The final part of the activity - Climate changes the world was a series of interviews with young climate activists from around the world. Slovak journalism students made interviews with activists from Ukraine, Scotland, India, Nigeria, Rwanda, Singapore and Mexico. They were published in the Slovak news portal Aktuality.sk every Thursday from the beginning of COP27.
