40 young climate activists will learn about the consequences of the climate crisis in Guatemala at a camp from July 10-22 and work together on ways to achieve climate justice.

On July 9th, climate activists from eight European and four Central American countries traveled to Guatemala and will be part of a special Climate Camp for two weeks. CIR is organizing the project trip as part of the EU-wide campaign "Game On - Don't let climate change end the Game". The goal: exchange, learn new things and - beyond the camp - sensitize and mobilize more people, especially in Europe, for the issue of climate justice.

The camp is preceded by intensive joint preparations, such as last fall's Climate Camp in Solingen (Germany) and regular online meetings, but also individual research on topics such as climate justice, ecocide and the human right to water. In this way, the two actors of the climate movements from Bulgaria, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Romania, Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Hungary come well prepared in exchange with activists from Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador and Nicaragua.

Inspiration and time for exchange

On the ground, the program consists of an exciting mix of field trips and time to work together. The diverse excursions, some with long-standing CIR partner organizations, are dedicated to topics such as climate, environment, mining, water management, adapted agriculture, but also memory work and women's economic autonomy. Inspired by these impressions and a joint tour and guided tour at Lake Atitlán, the young activists have time to exchange information about climate activities in the respective countries and to plan joint activities and communication strategies.

Films and flashmobs

What exactly the activists are planning: from press work and social media contributions to podcasts and various events such as workshops, lectures or even flash mobs, many things are possible. Accompanying film recordings also ensure that CIR can make the demands of the people affected by the climate crisis accessible to a larger audience. For this purpose, it cooperates with the #WorldWeWant campaign of the Climate Action Network. The climate activists will then present their jointly developed demands at a policy roundtable with EU parliamentarians in the fall.
