The Pilot Area is located along the Târgu Mureș – Târgu Neamț section (213 km long) of the future A8 (Târgu Mureș-Iași-Ungheni) motorway. This stretch of the future motorway will link two major historical Romanian regions: Transylvania in the west and Moldova in the
east. In accordance with this, the Pilot Area incorporates significant areas of land from both regions, more precisely from the Mureș, Harghita and Neamț counties.
The Pilot Area encompasses a section of the whole width of the Romanian Eastern Carpathians, as well as their foothills, both to the west and to the east. It incorporates a wide variety of habitat types and various land use options, according to which it can be divided into distinct sections,
