In 2021, in response to falling urban biodiversity, the European Union called on cities of over 200 000 residents to formalise Urban Greening Plans (UGPs). These plans, which range in their ambition, are a part of the EU’s larger Biodiversity Strategy for 2030. In Central and Eastern Europe, there are several cities which have successfully implemented greening strategies during this period. Not all of the projects listed in this guide are directly registered as UGPs; however, they all embody the general philosophy of the strategy and can serve as valuable best practice guides for other cities in the region.
