REVITALISATION OF THE PERNIN PEAT BOG

Organisation: Clean Air Action Group Website: Added: March 23, 2023
Project start date: July 26, 2018
Project end date: September 23, 2020

Narrative

The Revitalization project for the Pernink and Pernink Natural Monument aims to rectify the disrupted hydrological and hydrogeological conditions of the site to ensure an appropriate water regime and to revive the forest stands. The project utilizes a natural approach called renaturalisation, which promotes the growth of wetland vegetation, such as peat bogs and moss species, in areas with still or slowly flowing surface water. The goal is to restore the site's ecological balance and preserve its biodiversity. Overall, the Revitalization of peat bogs in the Pernink and Pernink Natural Monument project is a well-designed and strategic initiative that prioritizes the restoration of natural processes and ecosystems to achieve long-term sustainability. The project has the potential to create a positive impact on the environment, enhance the site's ecological and cultural values, and promote biodiversity conservation.

Financial data

Total cost of the project was 8 001 654 CZK (336 976 EUR), from which 7 601 571 CZK (320 127 EUR) was from EU subsidy and 400 082 CZK (16 848 EUR) from public resources of the Czech Republic.

Recommendations

The use of renaturalization as a method of restoration is a significant step towards achieving sustainability and preserving natural sites' biodiversity. This method involves working with the natural processes and ecosystem of the site, rather than imposing external measures that may cause further harm to the environment. Moreover, ensuring the necessary water regime is essential in maintaining the ecological balance of the natural sites. By correcting the disturbed hydrological and hydrogeological conditions, similar projects can help to reduce soil erosion, enhance water quality, and mitigate climate change. Therefore, it is important to support revitalization projects using the method of renaturalization.
