Towards a climate neutral EU:
efficient allocation of EU funds

Regional biomass pilot project

Organisation: Združenie Slatinka Website: Added: September 12, 2022
Project start date: January 01, 2003
Project end date: December 31, 2011

Narrative

The Biomass Bystricko Association of Municipalities with the support of Friends of the Earth-CEPA built 15 biomass boiler houses in 8 municipalities. The biomass comes from waste from local private or municipal sawmills that buy wood from municipal and urban forests. The association takes care of the whole operation - from purchasing the wood, chipping, storage to delivery of the wood to the boiler houses. The municipalities thus pay for the fuel and for the service to the association of which they are members - and the money flows into the local economy.

Financial data

Total funding: 7 051 967 EUR (85 % ERDF, 10% state buget, 5% municipal co-financing)

Recommendations

Support the development of similar economically and environmentally sustainable biomass projects in municipalities with local community involvement, by allocating more European Structural and Investment Funds or other european financial mechanisms.
